The award-winning transformation of the Cumberland Hotel into the Hard Rock Hotel London was completed using a stunning range of stone surfaces – fabricated and installed by stoneCIRCLE, for BECK, using Mapei preparation, fixing and finishing systems. Designed by architectural and interior design practice, Scott Brownrigg, the hotel’s stone work reflects the high-end aesthetic and traditional British colour palette, with finishes including Blue Lennon, Noir Saint Laurent and Silestone Calacatta Gold.
A landmark destination, on the corner of Oxford Street and Park Lane, the Hard Rock Hotel London’s public spaces were reimagined to comprise of an open plan lobby, Rockshop, Rock Royalty VIP Lounge, two bars and the Hard Rock Cafe®. Two years in creation, Scott Brownrigg’s design was steered by the brand’s musical heritage, with subtle ‘hard rock’ touches woven throughout. Stone finishes were specified to bring an opulent look and feel throughout, in a mix of rich colour tones. They included Blue Lennon granite bar tops, Silestone Calacatta Gold quartz reception desks, porcelain floor tiles – which cover most of the 1500m² floor area – and Noir St Laurent marble vanity tops and tiles throughout restrooms.
All fabrication was carried out at stoneCIRCLE’s Basingstoke workshop. During installation, the team used anti-facture membrane, Mapetex System, Keraquick S1 adhesive – a quick-setting, very low VOC deformable cementitious formulation and Latex Plus admixture. The installation was completed with Mapei Ultracolor Plus grout, in a variety of different shades; the polymer modified grout provides benefits including anti-efflorescence, a rapid set and features water-repellent DropEffect® and mould-resistant BioBlock®. Joints were then sealed with mould-resistant silicone sealant, Mapesil LM.
