Heatherwick Studio‘s plans to transform two disused Victorian coal drop buildings at King’s Cross railway station into 100,000 square metres of culture and leisure space have now been approved by Camden Council.
A new upper level will connect the roofs of these historic structures, with 65 units of art galleries, restaurants, bars and retailers contained inside. The surrounding coal yard will be transformed into a large public square.
Construction is due to start in early 2016, and will be completed by Q2 2018.
The space is part of a wider regeneration of the King’s Cross area, which has also seen the opening of Gasholder Park, designed by Bell Phillips Architects, and new restaurant, German Gymnasium, inside an historic 1860s building.
