22-year-old Furniture Design graduate from”Sheffield Hallam University, Lewis Nelson, presented his Douglas stool design at this year’s edition of New Designers.
Working predominantly with timber, and often incorporating traditonal fabrication techniques, Lewis’ work reflects an appreciation for the juxtaposition of traditional making skills and contemporary aesthetics.
Laminated from thin green timber sections, ‘Douglas’ has been designed with minimum timber wastage as the core focus point. Lamination steam bending is used to maximise the amount of product that can be harvested from a single tree and, by mixing raw steam-bent component parts with modern colours, ‘Douglas’ offers a contemporary twist on the ‘Windsor’ chair.
