OKU Hotels‘ first two openings, in Kos and Ibiza, are something of a ‘phonenix-from-the-ashes’ story. Purchased after the collapse of the Thomas Cook brand in 2019, both properties have undergone a design transformation under owner Westfort Capital.
OKU Ibiza is ideally situated on the fringe of Cala Gració bay, amidst lush hills and just moments from the nearby bay and beaches. The hotel comprises 185 boho-chic guest rooms and suites, alongside a standalone four-bedroom villa with a private pool, four swimming pools, two restaurants and an intimate spa.
The brand’s name is derived from the spiritual and architectural Japanese concept meaning ‘inner space’. This philosophy is at the heart of OKU Hotels’ portfolio of understated luxury destinations, with an emphasis on wellbeing practices, dining and musical experiences that awaken the senses.
OKU Ibiza’s design concept has been thoughtfully conceived by the brand’s in-house design team, and applied to its architecture by Miguel Garcia Quetglas and Andres Garcia Castiella, founding duo of the Ibizan architecture studio, MG&AG Arquitectos.
The Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, which champions the connection to earth and the use of natural materials, is an integral reference point for the interior design. The team drew inspiration from the local area, using locally sourced crafts and materials, and employing earthy, rustic and neutral tones throughout the property. The principles of OKU have been brought to bear in the meaningful use of space and the interplay of natural light and shadow.
OKU Ibiza’s cosy rooms feature a warm, bohemian feel, complete with natural coconut-fibre mattresses, comfy pillows, locally crafted decorative objects, Marshall Bluetooth speakers and spacious terraces or balconies.
For those seeking that next level of luxury, the property’s Private Villa is set in a tranquil corner of the hotel’s grounds. Accommodating up to eight guests, 180m2 of interior space is devoted to four bedrooms, a lounge, bar and dining area. The villa’s outdoor grounds are just as impressive, incorporating a large private pool and a terrace complete with seating areas and a pergola.
OKU Ibiza showcases the work of rising modern artists throughout the guest rooms and public spaces, including bespoke commissions by LA-based painter and sculptor Steve Tepas.
In terms of F&B, guests can select from destination dining at the OKU Restaurant or relaxed fare at To Kima. Both menus have been curated by executive chef Mark Vaessen, formerly from SUSHISAMBA. The impressive bar, meanwhile, is located adjacent to the restaurant, alongside the hotel’s 50m pool, and serves refreshing signature cocktails all day.
The hotel’s spa and wellness facilities offer a child-free, relaxed environment. Internationally trained spa therapists offer a host of treatments, working with local ingredients, or guests can take part in daily yoga and Pilates classes. A free-to-use gym, kitted out with NOHrD equipment, completes the offering.
Alongside its sister property in Kos, OKU Ibiza heralds an exciting time for the brand, which has plans to expand across the Mediterranean.
