BAR Studio has been appointed to design Fairmont Tokyo, the luxury brand’s first property in Japan, slated to open in 2025. The studio, recognised for its signature restrained elegance, is set to bring a contemporary, light, fresh touch to this new 219-room destination hotel.
BAR Studio will conceptualise interiors for guest rooms and suites and public spaces, including the arrival lobby, flagship restaurants and bars (with the exception of a Japanese eatery), spa, fitness centre, swimming pool, meeting and function facilities and a rooftop wedding chapel.
Offering striking views across Tokyo Bay and the iconic Rainbow Bridge, Fairmont Tokyo will form part of an emerging waterfront district, occupying the upper floors of the Shibaura Project’s South Tower. BAR Studio’s interior concept takes inspiration from this mixed-use location’s intriguing meeting of natural and urban environments, embracing both the bay with its outlying islands and the dynamic city.
Creating connection to both the bayside location and Tokyo’s cultural scene, the design will forge collaborations beyond the hotel’s boundaries. “By bringing art, craft and provenance to the forefront of the hotel, we aim to curate a mosaic of locally-inspired guest experiences” – says Lucas Chirnside, BAR Studio Project Design Director.
Master planning fosters links between locals and guests, curating shared public spaces that will showcase Tokyo’s vibrant creative and craft scenes. Diverse manifestations of gardens encourage moments of rest and reflection, while carefully selected art pieces will inspire connection to the surrounding area’s contemporary art scene.
BAR Studio set out to design an international destination for guests and locals taking its inspiration from the thrill and adventure of travel, with subtle references to exceptional journeys that hark back to Fairmont’s opulent origins.
Connected to the surrounding cultural and natural environments, Fairmont Tokyo is set to become a magnet for sophisticated urbanites, with BAR Studio teaming bespoke design encounters with sociable spaces in Tokyo’s new lifestyle hub.
