Shanti Maurice in Mauritius has opened its Rum Shed bar, the latest addition to the luxury resort’s extensive food and beverage offering. Built in the style of traditional rum shops, which are found across the island, Rum Shed offers a truly authentic Mauritian experience.
Known as the social hubs of Mauritius, rum shops are the equivalent to UK pubs, where locals meet for a drink with friends to discuss everything from sport to politics and world affairs. Echoing these venues, the shabby-chic Rum Shed captures the essence of a bygone era, with tavern-like windows and doors and old-school decor. Its walls are lined with wood planks from old fishing boats and tables and chairs are made out of bicycle rims, while 50-gallon oil drums act as hanging light fixtures.
The bar offers the largest collection of rums in Mauritius, with over 180 types from 36 countries, all displayed in vintage cupboards. A comprehensive selection of rum-based cocktails is also on offer, and guests can enjoy snacks including gateau piment, samosas or dholl-puri.
Duarte Correia, GM at Shanti Maurice, says: “Our aim is to provide guests with an authentic Mauritian experience and to enjoy the relaxed and convivial atmosphere commonly found in the island’s rum shops. Our new Rum Shed is a great replica of these shops, from the selection of beverages right down to the sacks of peanuts in the shell that you can simply throw on the floor when you are done, giving it the feeling of drinking in someone’s well-stocked shack.”
