The Surface Design Awards recognises and celebrates outstanding examples of progressive design and the use of innovative surfaces in projects, both in the UK and internationally. The highly respected awards were launched in 2013 and have grown in stature and quality year-on-year. The 2016 Surface Design Awards received 146 admissions from 24 different countries and has seen a strong variety of projects exploring the beauty of surfaces in private residencies, hospitals, restaurants, and a vast range of other projects.
A total of 36 projects have been named as finalists for the upcoming Surface Design Awards, with 13 awards to be given out within seven different categories – some of which are divided into interior and exterior sections. Roughly 40% of projects on the 2016 shortlist are from outside of the UK, covering an extensive 12 countries.
Each project is judged on a range of criteria including the type of surface, the use of materials and aesthetic design. Among the 2016 finalists are internationally revered firms, Foster + Partners, Heatherwick Studio and BuckleyGreyYeoman. The challenging task of choosing the shortlist inspired an animated debate on the virtues of each project and eventually saw a range of stand out surfaces being shortlisted.
The judging panel was co-chaired by Sarah Featherstone of Featherstone Young and Theresa Dowling of FX Magazine. The judges included: Andrew Waugh of Waugh Thistleton Architects; Anna Breheny of Scott Brownrigg Interior Design; Chris Jenkins of Peldon Rose; Diana Cochrane of Kent School of Architecture; Michaela Matheson of BDG Architecture + Design; Xavier Llarch Font of The Decorators and Sharon Stammers and Martin Lupton of Light Collective.
Introduced for 2016 is a sustainable surface category recognising the importance of this fast growing sector and suitably reflecting the global significance of this topic finalists are from Brazil, China and the UK. The much anticipated Supreme Award will return for 2016, highlighting which surface, in the judge’s opinion, is the stand out winner amongst all the entries.
All winners, including the Supreme Award winner, will be announced at a presentation held at Surface Design Show 2016 on Thursday 11th February at the Business Design Centre, London.
