A treat for the eyes and the tastebuds, Editor Vicky Lewis explored the striking design and detail at Hart Shoreditch’s stylish restaurant, UBA – a space that simultaneously dedicates itself to the culture of its divine Asian cuisine and the diverse locality it sits within.
Located in the heart of London’s vibrant Shoreditch district, UBA at Hart Shoreditch offers an unforgettable culinary and visual experience. More than just a restaurant, the space delivers plush interiors, innovative cocktails and Pan-Asian food which, when combined within the complete delivery on offer here, is a ‘playground for the senses’.
The restaurant describes the experience on offer as “embarking on a sensory journey through the vibrant streets of Asia, seamlessly blending East London’s dynamic spirit with the exotic allure of Pan-Asian flavours.” Both the interiors and the ambiance are inspired by the rich heritage of Shoreditch alongside the art of contemporary Asian dining.
Located in one of London’s most culturally dynamic areas, Shoreditch has long been a hub for artists, designers, and innovators, and this vibrancy has heavily influenced the hotel’s overall design language. UBA has steadied itself as a key feature of the hotel, serving as a bridge between the local ethos of creativity and craftsmanship and the rich traditions of Asian culture. The concept behind the interior design is a seamless blend of pan-Asian elements—drawing inspiration from regions such as Japan, China, Thailand, and Vietnam—with the industrial and contemporary aesthetic for which Shoreditch is known.
Although UBA is steeped in cultural references, the overall design is distinctly contemporary. The restaurant’s open-plan layout reflects a modern, urban style, with clean lines, minimalist furniture, and an uncluttered aesthetic that feels fresh and chic. Large windows allow natural light to flood the space during the day, offering a bright, airy feel, while also connecting the interior to the bustling streets of Shoreditch outside.
Verhaal is the architecture and interior studio that were commissioned to create the UBA experience. The interior has been carefully curated to complement the dining experience whilst paying homage to Asian culture and mythology. The entire space speaks to the rich colour palette of red and gold. Beautiful banquettes are upholstered in scarlet velvet and tabletops are lava stone, whilst counter dining for up to 14 is available at the statement marble bar. This area is a nod to the modern cocktail culture that has become synonymous with luxury dining in London, but with an Asian twist—the drink menu includes bespoke cocktails infused with ingredients like yuzu, sake, and lemongrass, which mirror the design’s thematic fusion of cultures. Illustrative artwork, calligraphy, colourful porcelain plates and statues and graphics, symbolising strength, and grace, complete the picture.
Lighting plays a crucial role in the design, with wall-height shelving providing housing for multiple simply lit lanterns interspersed by cascading green planting, softening the entire aesthetic. Natural light streams through the space during the daytime, creating an airy and open atmosphere that encourages guests to enjoy meals in a sunlit setting. As evening falls, the lighting shifts to a warmer, more intimate ambiance, thanks to carefully placed pendant lights and sconces that create a cozy glow.
A private dining room provides an intimate experience for up to 12 guests whilst a downstairs event space for larger parties and celebrations offers a myriad of hospitality options. The space is accessed via an enchanting spiral staircase featuring a striking hanging light fixture whose orb lanterns create a lunar effect, drawing guests through the space.
The restaurant’s position within Hart Shoreditch extends the warmth and style already present within the chic hotel and design elements follow throughout the entire building – the emphasis on lighting and on a biophilic design can be felt throughout the lobby and guestrooms. Art is a key concept within the hotel and restaurant, and the space collaborated with 2LG Studio to create an installation for this year’s London Design Fair. The dedication to design, art and colour can be felt from the moment of entry into this beautiful hotel, and UBA performs the role of ‘icing on the cake’!
Embodying the vibrant spirit of Shoreditch, this dynamic restaurant at Hart Shoreditch invites guests to indulge in a multi-sensory experience featuring a fusion of Pan-Asian flavours, inventive cocktails, and energetic ambiance presented in an artistic and whimsical atmosphere that captures the ‘Hart’ of the hotel.
